A really tiresome topic for quite a few dog owners. While it is now – thank god! – there are countless dog-friendly hotels, cafés and beaches, everyday life is often anything but dog-friendly. To be precise, everyday work.
Also in 2020, jobs where the employee can take his dog to work are the exception. It only looks completely different if the boss is a dog owner – he often takes his dog with him to work as a matter of course. Sometimes employees also benefit from this because they can follow the example. But even bosses who bring their own dog to work often prohibit their employees from bringing dogs with them. True to the motto: boss can do what “normal” employees are not allowed.
This is how labor law sees dogs in the workplace
According to labor law, dogs are pretty easy at work. If the dog is not required for therapeutic purposes, the consent of the employer is essential if you want to bring the dog to work. If you don’t stick to it and simply bring the dog with you without asking the boss, there can be a warning – and even a termination afterwards.
But even if the boss gave the OK to bring the dog to work, the colleagues should still be asked. Maybe someone has an allergy, then you would have to sit down and find a solution that satisfies both. The only way to bring the dog to work without the boss’s consent is to have a so-called “operational exercise”. This means that it has always been normal for workers to take their dog to work, in which case there is something of a common right.
Why bring dogs to work?
The question of why dogs should be brought to work is easy to answer. With the lunch break and the return trip, the working day often takes ten hours. Ten hours, in the worst case the dog would be completely alone and have to wait for the master or mistress to return. With larger families it is often still possible to organize the times so that the dog is never alone for long. However, the combination of work and dog ownership poses enormous problems for single people, because dog sitters are not exactly cheap either. Quite a few people therefore refrain from keeping dogs for professional reasons alone, although they actually want a dog with all their hearts.
Dog owners are the better workers
But what to do There are several answers to this. Thanks to the improved situation on the labor market, the negotiating position of employees has improved, and in some job advertisements it is even advertised that the dog can be taken to the workplace. Many employers strive to make the workplace as comfortable as possible, and this often includes allowing workers to take their dog to work. Satisfied and happy workers are almost always the more productive workers, so permission to bring dogs can even be reflected in the bottom line. And positive!
Raise the dog
If you want to take your dog to work with you, it is essential that the animal is well behaved. For example, it is far from good for the working atmosphere in an office if a dog barks every time the phone rings. The dog should therefore be brought up in such a way that it does not interfere with the operational process – and the colleagues do not feel disturbed by the dog either. This is the employee’s debt, so to speak. If there are still deficits in the dog, a dog trainer can also be consulted.
The tip from the creators of the dog blog: Simply talk from person to person – or from dog owner to employer – with the boss about bringing your dog with you and develop solutions together. After all, satisfied employees are the best employees, so, dear bosses of the world, create dog-friendly jobs!
